DESCRIPTION OF CLASSES

 1 - Caricatures (Animal & Human)     Phil & Vicki Bishop                                                Intermediate-Advanced

     5 days of carving caricatures from roughouts.  Need to bring large blade bench knife. Gouges #6-10mm 3/8", #7-5mm 3/16, #9-5/8". Veiners #11-2mm-1/16", #11-6mm 1/4", #11-8mm #/8".  V-tool 60%-1/4".  Cut resistance glove-required.  Need to bring paintbrushes - #5-12.

2 - Decorative Painting     Sally Carlson                                                                                  Novice-Advanced

5 days of decorative painting.  Will have one seasonal sign (summer) to complete the four seasons projects - plus at least 2 other painting projects.  Student needs to bring paints, brushes and other paint supplies.                                                                                          

Cost - $15.00 to $25.00                                                                                                                 10 students

3 - Old World Santas     Michele Carville                                                                         Intermediate-Advanced

    5 days of carving Old World Santas.  This class offers a variety of Santa roughouts for the intermediate to advanced carver.  Details will be taken to carve a pleasing face, anatomy and proportions will be stress.  Tool requirements: straight knife, 60%-1/4" V-tool, veiners #11-3mm to #11-10mm, gouges #3-1", #7-!/2". Paintbrushes-sizes #6-13 and a paint pallet.

Cost - $10.00 to $37.00                                                                                                                  12 students

4 - Carving Moose Antlers    Kirt Curtis                                                                                  ONLY ADVANCED

     5 days of carving antlers.  Tools needed for project, power tools, Foredom, Hi-speed grinder, dust collector (required), dust mask, various cutters.  Cutter package is put together by Larry Yudis/Jake Schmidt, The Woodcraft Shop, Bettendorf, IA  52722, 1-800-397-2278.

Cost - Approx. $100.00                                                                                                                  12 students

PS - No moose are killed for this project, the antler will be natural drops found in the woods of Maine (for those who may not know moose shed their antlers every year - these are called drops.

5 - Woodburning     Orchid Davis                                                                                            Novice-Advanced

    5 days of woodburning.  Choice of projects are birds and animals.  Need wood burner, tips, sandpaper and pencils.  $5.00 for pattern packets.  Do one large project or two small projects.

Cost - $3.00 to $18.00                                                                                                                    10 students

6 - Easy to do Class Pieces     John Davis                                                                           Novice-Intermediate

    5 days of easy to do projects from blanks.  These projects can be done in one day.  Some of the projects are: brogan work shoe, playing spoons, stylized owl, love spoons, usable spoon and scoop, flutes, bowls (hand carved), sleeping bunnies, shelf mouse, walking sticks made from sapling-bark skinned off and wood burned with message about Doane, etc. with leather hand grip and rubber tip.  Need to bring your own tools.  Some tools will be for sale.

7 - Christ Head & Praying Hands     Len Dillon                                                                Intermediate-Advanced

     5 days of carving, choice of Christ Head-2/3 size with/crown of thorns in the round (basswood) or Praying Hands-full size-relief (basswood).  Need to bring small and large tools, carving screws, paintbrushes.  Bench fee ($5.00) is due the first day of class.

8 - Human Mask Realistic (American Heroes)     Marty Dolphens                                     Intermediate-Advanced

    5 days of carving American heroes.  Projects will be Fireman and Policeman masks-1 blank, 1 roughout (basswood) finish with oil.  Bring large tools, mallet, paintbrushes, carving screw, size 12".  Bench fee ($5.00) is due the first day of class.

Cost - $30.00 to $35.00 each                                                                                                          15 students

9 - Ducks & Birds     Rene (Doc) Hlavac                                                                                   Novice-Advanced

     5 days of carving your choice of: 1. Ring-necked Drake (full size).  2. Ring-necked Drake, challenge bird (full size).  3. Great Horned Owl (less than full size).  4. Ruddy Duck, challenge bird, (full size).  5. Red-winged Blackbird (option-flying or standing).  Need to bring power grinder, must have dust collector, carving tools and supplies.

10 - Blacksmith, Woman Carrying Water, Woman Aviator     Carlan Honaker                            Novice-Advanced

    5 days of carving.  Projects are:  1. German blacksmith at anvil, 17" tall.  2. Woman carrying water on shoulder and one in her hand, 10" tall.  3. Woman Aviator - WASP gal of WW II, 15 1/2".  Student needs to bring large and small tools, carving screw, clamp on light.  No power tools.  Project will be from roughouts.  Bench fee ($5.00) is due the first day of class.

Cost - $25.00 to $45.00                                                                                                                  12 students

11 - Chip Carving     Sheila Hunter                                                                                            Novice-Advanced

    5 days of chip carving.  Student needs to bring wood glue, brown paper sack, clamp on light, scissors, ruler, pencil.  Project carving boxes, plates, crosses, etc.

Cost - $4.50 to $27.00                                                                                                                    15 students

12 - Moose in Habitat     Linda Langenberg Curtis                                                              Intermediate-Advanced

    5 days of carving a moose in habitat from a roughout.  Need to bring hand tools, power tool, bits, wood burner, tips, dust collector, clamp on light, paintbrushes.  Project size: height 7"-8", depth 5"-6", length 9".

Cost - $30.00                                                                                                                                 12 students

13 - Western or Native American     Bob Lawrence                                                                    Novice-Advanced

     5 days of carving realistic figures.  Choices will be a western or native American.  Project in basswood and range from 12" to 14" tall.  Bob will concentrate on anatomy and structure.  Class is designed for hand holding project using small tools of choice.  Finishing materials will be available.

14 - Carousel Horse     Dorothy Lewis                                                                                       Novice-Advanced

    5 days of carving a carousel horse.  The project height (top of pole) 12", body height of horse approx. 6.5".  Choice of jumper or stander.  Need to bring hand tools, knives, palm gouges, reference material.  Kit will include pole.

15 - Carving Elk Antlers     Roger Lyon                                                                            Intermediate-Advanced

    5 days of totally power carving on elk antlers.  There is not a lot of size on elk antlers.  So a small scene carved into the side of the antler.  Student needs to bring dust collector, some type of grinder (Dremel, Foredom, etc.), dental burrs, diamond cutters, carbide cutzalls (small) or what burrs you have, clamp on light, power cords and Optivisor 1.

16 - Caricatures - Civil War Soldier    Keith Morrill                                                            Intermediate-Advanced

    5 days of carving caricatures.  The project is "Ol Ramrod".  A caricature of a Civil War Soldier (Union or Confederate) pouring powder in his muzzler loader.  Additional caricature-cowboy.  Need to bring knife, gouges, V-tools and paintbrushes.

17 - Relief Indian Portrait Carving     Larry Nowell                                                            Intermediate-Advanced

     5 days of a carving a Indian portrait, Larry will teach steps required to carve any portrait in relief from a photo.  Need to bring full-size gouges, mallet, compass, dividers, pencil and ruler.  No power tools.  Size - 8 1/2" to 11".

18 - Trolls     Gary Paulsen                                                                                                       Novice-Advanced

     5 days of carving a troll made from basswood blank (11" tall).  The project will not be painted in class.  Additional troll blanks will be available.  Need to bring clamp on light, knife and palm gouges.

19 - Basket Weaving     Buck Reinecker                                                                                    Novice-Advanced

     5 days of basket making. All material for baskets will be provided.  Student needs to bring: scissors, knife, sandpaper, (medium grit), awl, (ice pick or narrow screwdriver), sponge or wash cloth, ruler, yardstick or tape measure, spring hand clamp, 5 qt. plastic ice cream bucket or tub (20"-24" diameter), pruning shears, block plane and needle nose pliers.

20 - Songbird     Steve Schumacher                                                                                Intermediate-Advanced

    5 days of carving a common yellow throat and habitat.  Branches made out of brass tubing and leaves from copper.  Need to bring dust collector, protective ear wear, power tool, bits, clamp on light, extension cord, paintbrushes and sealer.  Teacher will supply blank feet, eyes and habitat.

21 - Relief Carving      Dorothy Huser/Elaine & Fred Stenman                                             Intermediate-Advanced

    Dorothy will teach Monday on barn or lighthouse (basswood - 6 1/2 x 8").  Need to bring palm chisels, straight edge and pencils.

Cost - $7.00 to $8.00                                                                                                                     15 students

    Elaine & Fred will teach Tuesday to Friday low relief carving.  Two projects will be completed.  1. a simple woodburned barn, 2. larger low relief barn or cabin.  Carving with wood burned details.  Both projects will be painted and stained during class.  Both Elaine and Fred are teaching again this year.  Carvers who have taken this class before can choose a larger more complex design or a cutout relief of lighthouse, a pelican etc.  Need carving tools (3 sweep gouges of various sizes), wood burner, paintbrushes, clamp on light and small fan.

22 - Caricature - Horse and Rider     Dave Stetson                                                           Intermediate-Advanced

     5 days of carving a rearing horse and rider.  Rider can be a Cowboy or Indian.  Ambitious project, but can be carved in 5 days from a roughout.  Emphasis will be placed on caricature expression and anatomy.  Need to bring standard hand carving tools.  Size of projects-12" x 4" x 8".

23 - Caricatures     Bob Travis                                                                                                  Novice-Advanced

    5 days of carving caricatures.  Carving caricatures from basswood block (2" x 2" x 4").  Instruction will cover first caricature, then students can select from several examples for the rest of the week.  Each student will receive one on one instructions on each project.  Will paint on Friday.  Need to bring carving glove, hand tools, small gouges, V-tools and medium size knife.  No power tools.

ONE A DAY PROJECTS

Student may choose the whole week or one day, two days, etc.  Basket weaving students may take one or two days.

 

Monday - Christmas Card Basket     Kay Wannamaker

    Basket made from reeds.  Can be used to hold cards or flower arrangement.

Tuesday - Ukrainian Wooden Eggs     Rita Blanton

    Wood burning and painting of traditional Ukrainian design on wooden eggs.  Need to bring wood burner, paintbrushes and compass.

Cost - $10.00 to $12.00                                                                                                                 15 students

Wednesday - Ceramic Santa or Angel     Sandy Foral  

    Ceramic - 1. Santa  2. Angel (6" to 10" tall).  The ceramics will be cleaned and fired; will supply paint and brushes; will do regular style.  But will discuss dry brush techniques and translucent styles.  Need to hear from those interested as to what project they would like to do.

Thursday - Two Dancing Snowmen     Linda Schmidt

    You will be painting two dancing snowmen on a wall hanging or on a wooden box.  Need to bring paintbrushes.

Cost - $15.00                                                                                                                               12 students

Friday - Quilting     Carol Shriver

     Small appliqué wall hanging.  Need to bring basic sewing kit, regular needle and thread, fabric and paper scissors and thimble (if you use one).

Cost - $20.00                                                                                                                              12 students
