An annual summer workshop is held at Doane College, Crete, Nebraska. A wide selection of classes are offered. This has been a productive experience for all who attend. We use the college's facilities for carving, as well as room and board. The cost is determined each year according to projected expenses.

CAN YOU HANDLE THIS SEMINAR?

by Joe Schumacher

Level of Carver: Beginner-Intermediate-Advanced. Which one are you?

This is a question most of us ask ourselves very time we look at a seminar sign up sheet. Let's talk about where you might fit in. To start with each instructor knows their project and the level of carver that can accomplish it. So when I set up a Seminar that's one of the questions I ask. What level of carver can handle this seminar? Some instructors will take any level of student in their class, while some instructors do not want the class, as a whole, to be slowed down by an individual who is not able to handle the project. So let's talk about the different Levels of carvers.

ALL LEVELS: This is pretty self explanatory everybody is welcome.

BEGINNERS: Has completed a beginning carving class, like the one our club offers. Knows the uses of most tools; has basic sharpening skills; has carved more than a few pieces with the aide of a book or another carver. Can handle different finishing methods. Has a desire to learn more.

INTERMEDIATE: Has completed several seminars, preferably on different types of carving and different instructors. Is comfortable not having the instructor by them all the time. Is starting to develop a preference for the types of carving they wish to pursue. Is using most or all of the techniques the have acquired to this point. Their tool set is growing larger. Has completed many projects on their own. Is be becoming very competent with finishing their carvings. Is starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Has started helping new beginning carvers with the same problems they have previously had.

ADVANCED: Has developed own preference and style of carving. Has done many carvings
